The Three Sisters

12 Oct

The Three Sisters is the name given to a natural body of mountains in Song LGA of Adamawa state. Although it is not clearly known how the mountains came about the title, people around the place really behave in appreciation of the natural wonder. They believe the threesome mountains form a

part of them and as such, take them as family. The place is not too far from Jimeta in Yola, because it is just about an hour’s drive from the Adamawa state capital. The beauty of it and the strange story about the mountains makes it a tourism site for people all around the world who come and share the wonderful ambience of these mountains. Interestingly, approaching the mountains, one would only see the three slanting inwards to the right. The most prominent one is the mountain to the left and it is the only one that could be climbed by interested persons. The people around the area say it is not possible to climb the one in the middle.

Though it is the smallest amongst the three, it no doubt harbors wonders in no small way. From a distance, as you approach the site coming from Jimeta, it would seem like the first mountain is the biggest followed by the second but surprisingly, the last Mountain is the biggest of the three, isn’t that amazing! Lore has it that the one in the middle is a volcanic Mountain that erupted some 20 something years ago, before the Bango people who speak Bata as their language, came to live at the foot of the mountain. Though they are mixed with the Fulani, for the Bango people, the Three Sisters will surely be a significant part of their history, because according to them, once the middle mountain erupted violently and they had to move to the side of the mountain for safety.

Since then, they have found it difficult to live at the boot of the mountain as before because they are not so sure the mountain would erupt again as it had precisely five years ago. This recent one happened when people around the area felt the ground rambling such that was felt by even people far away from the mountains. This drew the attention of people towards the mountain where they saw rocks hurtling downhill. “It was an experience that could not be explained, how it felt to see such a thing,” said an old man who was an eye witness.

Many people had tried to climb the mountain in the middle but it proved impossible because of its steepness and sharp edges. Some believe that there is a spirit being that lives on the mountain that makes it difficult to climb the mountain. Most people who dared to disprove the belief ended up dying but for one man who was lucky to be alive despite being unable to make it to the top. He got stuck midway trying to snatch the egg of a vulture. He was not able to come down before good Samaritans gathered and helped him down with ladder. Apart from him, nobody else has been known to survive.

On getting to the top of the mountain, the atmosphere around you changes immediately. The view from the mountain top is simply marvelous. You get to see the beauty of the whole setting in such a way that is captivating you would feel like not coming down. If you get to visit Song in Adamawa state without climbing the mountain, you would just miss most of the fun and enjoyable part of your visit and if you have never been to the place, try and go there. It is a place you would not want to miss. The journey to the Three Sisters Mountain is always a memorable promise. Personally, it will always be part of me wherever I go
